Renowned classical singer Ustad Rashid Khan, aged 55, passed away in a Kolkata hospital today.
He was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer, and his health had worsened since a cerebral attack last month.
Ustad Rashid Khan, a member of the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana, is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter.
Despite the hospital's efforts, he succumbed to his illness at around 3:45 pm, as reported by news agency PTI.
Prominent singers like Rekha Bhardwaj and Sonu Nigam expressed sorrow over Khan's passing on Instagram.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the hospital and announced a gun salute and state honors for the late singer.
Ustad Rashid Khan's last rites are scheduled for Wednesday, with his body to be placed in a mortuary today and later taken to Rabindra Sadan for admirers to pay their respects.
The musician had been on ventilation support, and his health had deteriorated following a cerebral attack last month.
