In a bid to reclaim its smartphone market dominance, Samsung launched the highly-anticipated Galaxy S24 series at its Unpacked event on Wednesday. Consisting of three variants – the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 – the lineup aims to captivate consumers with advanced AI functionalities.
The Galaxy S24 series introduces ‘Galaxy AI,’ a cutting-edge feature set designed to enhance user experience and redefine how individuals interact with their smartphones. Among the standout features are Live Translate, Chat Assist, and ‘Circle to Search,’ showcasing Samsung’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological innovation.
One standout feature of the Galaxy S24 series is the Live Translate functionality, allowing users to conduct real-time voice translations during phone calls in 13 different languages. This on-device AI function leverages Samsung’s proprietary generative AI training, providing a seamless and efficient communication tool for users globally.
Moreover, the ‘Circle to Search’ feature, powered by Google, empowers users to search any part of an image on their screen simply by circling it. This integration of AI-driven capabilities demonstrates Samsung’s dedication to creating a more intuitive and user-friendly smartphone experience.
TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics, expressed enthusiasm about the transformative impact of the Galaxy S24 series, stating, “The Galaxy S24 series transforms our connection with the world and ignites the next decade of mobile innovation. Galaxy AI is built on our innovation heritage and deep understanding of how people use their phones. We’re excited to see how our users around the world empower their everyday lives with Galaxy AI to open up new possibilities.”
In addition to these headline features, the Galaxy S24 series includes AI-driven functionalities like translation of message tones into casual, formal, business, or social media styles. The smartphones also boast AI summaries and translations of voice recordings, as well as “generative editing” of photos that intelligently fill in non-existent backgrounds.
Crucially, Samsung emphasizes the on-device AI capabilities of the Galaxy S24 series. By leveraging generative AI functions downloaded to each user’s device after being trained, these smartphones do not require constant connectivity to the cloud. This approach, championed by companies like Qualcomm and Samsung, is heralded as a more secure method for handling personal information, as it eliminates the need to send data to the cloud for processing.
As Samsung seeks to regain its position in the fiercely competitive smartphone market, the Galaxy S24 series serves as a testament to the company’s commitment to innovation and user-centric design. With advanced AI functionalities and a focus on on-device processing, Samsung aims to set a new standard for secure and intelligent smartphone experiences.
